Help Available To Kentucky Small Businesses Affected by Lower Water
Levels on Lake Cumberland
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)
announced that small businesses in Kentucky impacted by low water levels
on Lake Cumberland January 1, 2007 and continuing, can get one-on-one
assistance in completing their economic injury disaster loan applications
(EIDLs).
Business owners in the counties of Clinton, Laurel, McCreary, Pulaski,
Russell and Wayne Counties and the neighboring counties of Adair, Casey,
Clay, Cumberland, Jackson, Knox, Lincoln, Rockcastle, and Whitley in
the Commonwealth of Kentucky and neighboring counties of Campbell,
Clay, Pickett and Scott in the State of Tennessee are eligible to apply
for these disaster loans from SBA.
Eligible small businesses may qualify for loans up to $1.5 million.
The interest rate is
4 percent with loan terms up to 30 years. These working capital
loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and
other bills that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred. These
loans are not intended to replace lost sales or profits. SBA
determines eligibility for the loans based on the size and type of
the business and its financial resources. Loan amounts and terms
are set by SBA and based upon applicant's financial condition.
Beginning Monday, July 9th SBA will be visiting in the most significantly
impacted communities to issue disaster loan applications and answer
program questions. The temporary Disaster Loan Outreach Centers
(DLOC) will be open at the following locations and times:

Completed loan applications must be returned to SBA no later than March
26, 2008.
Anyone unable to visit the Center(s) may obtain an application by calling
the SBA's Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955 (1-800-877-8339
for the hearing-impaired) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. EDT.
Business loan applications can also be downloaded from the SBA website
at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance. Completed applications
should be return to the Centers or mailed to: U.S. Small Business Administration,
Processing and Disbursement Center, 14925 Kingsport Road, Fort
Worth, TX. 76155.
BRAINSTORMING MEETING
At the request of Governor Ernie Fletcher, Randy Fiveash, Commissioner
of the KY Department of Tourism and Hilda Legg with the Governor’s
Lake Cumberland Regional Office, recently hosted a small brainstorming
meeting in Somerset. The goal was to evaluate what has been done so
far this season, what is working as well as what is not working, see
what needs to happen for the rest of this season and to make plans
for next year.
A lively discussion generated a variety of good short and long term
ideas. In the coming days those lists will be compiled and evaluated
and shared with this group. We do not claim to have a corner on the
market for good ideas so we are open to your suggestions as well. Feel
free to e-mail your ideas back to me and I will include them on our
list of ideas to evaluate. While no idea is too big or too small, please
keep them realistic.
NO PLANS TO LOWER LAKE LEVEL FURTHER
US Army Corps of Engineers Colonel Steve Roemhildt says there are
no plans to lower the level of the lake further, and that the situation
is improving.
